“Allow people the dignity of their own experience.” - Alissa Boyer⁠

A lot of highly sensitive people make themselves responsible for managing someone else’s experience.⁠
⁠
Through the lens of friendships and social dynamics, this can look like:⁠
⁠
You’re holding onto a friendships that’s reached its expiration date. You feel drained, misaligned, and like you’re moving in different directions but you hang on because you feel guilty and like a “bad person” if you don’t.⁠
⁠
You walk on eggshells with your friend who gets mad and jealous about little things. You’re always trying to please her and be available to her because she becomes passive aggressive when you don’t.⁠
⁠
You have a friend who’s always emotionally dumping onto you and it’s cutting into your life. You feel obligated to answer her phone calls at all hours, even if it interrupts time with your husband. You feel responsible for fixing her problems.⁠
⁠
When you’re highly sensitive, it’s easy to feel other people’s pain and discomfort. You can tell when someone’s triggered and it can be really hard when you feel like you “caused” it.⁠
⁠
But one of the best and most powerful things you can do, both for yourself and others, is to allow others the dignity of their own experience.⁠
⁠
Let them feel how they feel. Think what they think. Without trying to swoop in and fix or change just to manage your own discomfort. 🙏🏼⁠

Learning how to do this will give you so much more peace and confidence in your life and relationships.⁠

✖️ Provide Unconditional Support: Their support is usually conditional and self-serving.⁠
✖️ Celebrate Your Successes: They will downplay, ignore, or feel threatened by your achievements.⁠
✖️ Accept Criticism: They react defensively to criticism, often attacking the person providing feedback.⁠
✖️ Allow You to Be Independent: They prefer you to be dependent on them to maintain their sense of superiority.⁠

Recognizing these patterns can help you protect yourself and set healthier boundaries. 💪⁠
