One of the most confusing parts of narcissistic abuse is the inconsistency.⁠
They’re not hurtful every moment.⁠
They can be warm, generous, attentive - and cruel, dismissive, or manipulative.⁠
That back-and-forth keeps you questioning your reality instead of recognizing the pattern.⁠

If this feels familiar, here are a few grounding reminders:⁠
⁠
1. Consistency matters more than moments.⁠
Anyone can be kind sometimes. Pay attention to the overall pattern, not the highlight reel.⁠
⁠
2. Mixed behavior is a manipulation tactic.⁠
Kindness is used to pull you close… just enough to keep you from leaving. That confusion is not love — it’s control.⁠
⁠
3. Trust your nervous system.⁠
If your body feels on edge even during “good moments,” that’s a sign you’re not actually safe.⁠
⁠
4. Stop negotiating with potential.⁠
Look at how they actually show up- not how good they are on their best day.⁠
⁠
5. Talk to someone grounded in reality.⁠
Healing becomes easier when someone else can help reflect the truth back to you (a therapist, a trusted friend, or a safe community).⁠
⁠
You’re not “overreacting.”⁠
You’re not “too sensitive.”⁠
You’re responding to inconsistency that was designed to keep you confused.⁠
⁠

What boundary system did you download?⁠

Most people don’t consciously create their boundaries, they inherit them.⁠
⁠
We absorb our boundary system early in life through how safety, accountability, and emotional expression were modeled around us.⁠
⁠
If love was conditional, you learned to people-please.⁠
⁠
If repair never followed conflict, you learned to walk on eggshells.⁠
⁠
If expressing your needs led to shame or withdrawal, you learned that silence was safer than honesty.⁠
⁠
These experiences don’t just shape how you protect yourself, they shape how you connect.⁠
⁠
They teach your nervous system what love requires: compliance, distance, perfection, or performance. And because those patterns feel familiar, we often recreate them in adulthood without realizing it.⁠
⁠
Avoidance, for example, usually begins long before you.⁠
⁠
It’s often a learned defense, a way to maintain control and avoid the shame of getting it wrong.⁠
⁠
When accountability once felt , avoidance became the path of least resistance.⁠
⁠
And if you’re the empathic one, that avoidance activates your old boundary system.⁠
⁠
You step in, over-function, explain, and regulate both sides to preserve connection. It feels caring, but it’s a form of self-abandonment.⁠

Rebuilding your boundary system isn’t about becoming guarded-it’s about becoming grounded.⁠
⁠
It’s about teaching your nervous system that safety doesn’t depend on keeping the peace or managing another person’s discomfort.⁠
